Additional measures should be taken by local authorities in order to support the quality of long-term care schemes developed for the elderly in particular regions.This chapter refers to the literature related with a series of aspects of long term care, especially regarding the elderly, with no geographic limitation. The issue of long-term care for the elderly is examined thoroughly taking into consideration the development of the relevant schemes through the years. The views of researchers on the specific issue are critically presented at the level that they can help to the explanation of current LTC schemes applied for elderly worldwide – the limitation of the study in the area under examination – Southern California – will follow showing practical aspects of the above schemes across the specific region.

From the twelfth through fifteenth century almost seven hundred shelters for the aged were constructed in England. A careful estimate reveals that these institutions housed populations that were similar to those long-term residents in the modern day’s facilities, the persons in older age, those without any substantial means of support in their houses and the handicapped. In the year 1536 in a dispute and disagreement with Catholic Church King Henry VIII closed each and every monastery along with their long-term facilities.
