Discussion Questions on Ethics Discussion Questions on Ethics Question Human beings have widespread characteristics that either appear naturally to them or are natured. Naturally, the characteristics that appear in human beings are selfish and greed. This is because they do not possess the ability to portray their good side. However, the concept does not apply to all human beings. There are those with the rare gift of not having any of these poor traits. After nurturing and proper treatment of people, particularly at a young age, they are able to reduce the effect of these negative traits and assume the rare characteristics of generosity and kindness. This is the case as witnessed in many of the societies. It is due to this that it is important for the people around us to offer nurturing and support. This support is important for the development of the mind and other natural characteristics. Advice is that nurturing takes place at a young age. This is for the best results in the character of the kid as he matures. Question 2 It is the duty of all human beings to show care and concern for others. This is due to the fact that the kind of help and assistance offered to others is the same one reciprocated to us. This is also for the assurance of an environment conducive enough for their thriving. When showing the care and concern, its direction is to anybody that requires it. This should not only go to the people that we are related to. The reason as to why we do this is for the achievement of proper coexistence of people who can rely on each other in times of need having the fact that human beings are interdependent. Human character receives judgment from the deeds that they carry out. It is from this that the natural behavior observed and categorized. There are the various people who do not show any care or concern for their fellow human beings. This is taken to be very unjust and is naturally treated with a lot of reckoning from the society. However, for the people that act up and offer the kind of support needed not only to their families but also to the people around them, they rewarded in many ways. Question 3 When people claim that murder is wrong, they just believe that it is wrong and do not necessarily believe in what they say. They believe it is wrong arising from the many ethics and related studies offered in life. Few people acknowledge that murder is wrong due to knowledge. This is because the education offered to people directs them to knowing the notion against the idea of murder. It is important to recognize the fact that people carry out activities from the experience that they have getting guidance and majorly not out of their own mentality. Human beings possess this natural characteristic. Question 4 To qualify people as immortal, they must possess very indifferent human characteristics. The people I have in mind died a short while ago and their deaths took me by surprise. This is due to the characteristics that they possessed. An example of the characteristic is that very few times did the fall ill and even never visit the hospital even once. However, after their diagnosis of sickness, they died rather fast and this came as a shocker to many. Question 5 It is not morally permissible to use the human and animal DNA in the manner in which it is done. This is due to the fact that it defies all codes of character that are majorly against the alteration of human and any other beings. This is also against the bible that strongly preaches against these acts. The bible is the source of people’s judgment of morality and hence the manipulation of the human genes for creation of hybrids is ethically wrong. 1) For Plato, what kind of ability is necessary for one to entertain higher-level concepts or moral ideas? Like the rest of the early philosophers, Plato upholds a virtue-based eudaemonistic ethics. That is to mean, human well-fare, is regarded as the highest endeavor of moral thought and behavior; the qualities are the necessary skills and traits. If Plato’s support for an ethic’s of happiness appears rather unresponsive that is because of some varied reasons. To start with, Pluto’s notion of happiness varies in noteworthy ways from the common perceptions. He has devoted so much time into underrating the ancient understanding of the good life as to illustrating his own notion of happiness. Pluto has also considered happiness as a condition of perfection that is difficult to understand since it’s based on metaphysical beliefs that appears unclear and out of the realm of common perception. 2) Describe the scenario that Plato discusses in the text involving the den or cave and the prisoners. Different explanations have been brought forward regarding Plato’s allegory. The philosopher has given a description about a group of people who have been put in custody in a dark cave since they were born. According to Pluto the prisoners are commonly alleged as being “chained to their chairs’ from the time of their birth, facing the cave wall, not able to either move or turn around. This is in contrast to what Kelly Ross describes on how the prisoners are ‘tied up on the floor’. A fire is above and also behind the prisoners, burning at a distance. 3) What do you think is the point or message of Socrates allegory or parable of the cave? I tend to think that, the message by Socrates indicates that the occupants of the den are only able of seeing the shadows of puppets, of which themselves are just mimics of livings things that are real. That is to say, the occupants of the cave are only able to see appearances of the material things, but not their true nature. The shadows that they are adapted to view, seems real more than the puppets themselves. 4) For Socrates/Plato, why must the soul turn away from the changing world? As regards Plato, person(s) who seems as though they have been chained under the cave are more often hesitant to govern the dealings of men. Their souls have always a will to pay out their time in the upper world. They always have a rough time construing from the larger dealing such as the meditation of divine things as contrasted to the miseries of the usual human life. The soul will have a hard time distinguishing between the good and the evil. In essence, education does not really give out what it is supposed to bring, or in other words it is not what it is meant to be, since it does not either put knowledge into soul or possess it. There is therefore a need for the soul to turn in order to fulfill all that is still questionable under this philosophy. 5) What for Plato is the highest object of knowledge or reality? The highest object of knowledge or reality in that matter is the knowledge of the Good; that is to say, not simply the knowledge of particular advantage and pleasures, but relationship with the for itself. 6) In the allegory, Socrates describes the role of the philosopher using the metaphor of "king" or leader. Explain his point in this excerpt. In his excerpt, Socrates alleged that a perfect state, exemplifying the highest and best potential of human social life, can actually be attained, if only the right people are put in charge. Since the road to achievement of the entire process is the wisdom of the rulers who initiate decisions for the entire city, Socrates maintained that an ideal society will only arise only when the king becomes philosophers or rather the philosophers are made kings.
