? Sleep Disorder Sleep Disorder Introduction Human beings always experience various issues in life some of which may alter major human activities and disrupt the normal ways of life. Such disruption that may occur includes sleep disorder, which in turn may cause various problems. This paper examines a case study about Bess a young person who has been experiencing sleep disorder. The paper identifies the symptoms for her conditions and the reasons for this happening. The paper further identifies various ways through which she can be helped. The essay further presents theoretical explanations for insomnia and various modes of treatment and interventions for insomnia. Reasons why the patient has come for treatment should open the paper The patient finds it difficult to fall asleep. For her to fall asleep, she has to use pills or take refuge in alcohol. This is a typical sign of sleep disorder. The patient therefore seeks treatment because of her sleep disorder. Sleep disorder is a medical condition, which affects the pattern of sleep in a person. The sleep disorder has the capability of interfering with a person’s physical, emotional, and mental functioning (Mindell, & Owens, 2010). Sleep disorder brings about a condition known as insomnia. Insomnia causes disruption of one’s daily activities. One has to experience enough sleep to have normal brain and emotional balance. It is worth seeing the doctor because one has to have relationships with people to lead a normal lifestyle. While at work, one may not perform to the required standard. Bess has to seek for the medical attention because her health is at risk. She is already conditioned to alcohol and drugs to have sleep. This lifestyle is risky for her because her job may be at risk. She is an accountant, a job that requires maximum concentration and keenness. This disorder may cause disruption of her mental concentration; which may lead to errors thus causing losses and imperfection to her work. Lack of sleep is dangerous for it can cause one’s inability to cope and handle stress, efficiency of work of one get reduced, and a great loss of energy. Bess behaviors are a clear indication that she has problem with sleeping. She stays late at night watching the television with a hope of catching sleep but this does not become fruitful. This minimizes her chances of relaxation thus making her to be a rigid person at work. Her character of being a perfectionist though necessary for the nature of her job may not align well in personal relationship. Her mother often wanted the best for. She tried giving Bess the warmth of affection: a thing that Bess did not even recognize. Other than spending her time on the television, she is primped into alcohol. This may cause addition to her because she may be conditioned to take alcohol daily to entice sleep. Daily consumption of alcohol may make her alcohol dependant. However, alcohol, with is nature, impairs judgment and it interferes with peoples’ physiological functionality. The history of Bess’ parentage and family status a be one of the contributing factors to her sleeping condition. Her parents divorced when she was only 10: a situation that could have led to emotional imbalances and coping with the reality of this misfortune that befell her parents may have caused the emotional problem. Bess has had limited time with her father. Naturally, it is traumatizing when a child sees her parents with full knowledge that parents are not in good terms. It is traumatizing and a times coping up with the same may be a reality difficult to accept (Carney, Berry, & Geyer, 2012). Bess needs psychological and medical intervention to help her cope with her life and accept the reality. Section 2 Insomnia is a disorder that has to be taken care of and treated lest it become hazardous to an individual. (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder) DSM is the measure mostly applied by therapist and mental health experts. This method has a wider array of application and clinician and researchers for different orientations. The DSM is mostly reliable because it is applicable for a wide array of people. It is applicable for the inpatients, outpatients, private practice, clinics, primary care, and liaisons. This method is open for a wide range of people. Psychiatrists, physicians, psychologists, workers, rehabilitation therapist, and counselors can utilize the DSM. The conditions that are resulting to sleep disorder to Bess bear due to her social deprivation. She feels lonely and deprived of her social life. The first thing towards her healing is to avoid lonely life. Human being is social beings by nature. For one to find emotional satisfaction, one has to interact with people to ensure that social fulfillment is achieved. This is the method through, which she can relax after work instead of locking herself on the television and taking solace in alcohol. The next thing that is causing sleep disorder is her family background and history. Her parents divorced when she was only 10 and since then, she has been living with her mother who treated her like a doll. She has led a life of loneliness and without emotional support from the family. Bess has to overcome her past to live the past and pick up new attitude of life. Living in the past will just perpetuate her pain and this will worsen her condition. It is therefore important that she move on with life without sticking to the misfortunes of the past. Discussion Theoretical basis of identifying sleep disorder Correlates of Sleep Sleep is largely considered as a psychological state not just a mere physical state. Sometimes it is difficult to determine how enough sleep is a cross variety of species; but most importantly, it is worth identifying that sleep is an important aspect of human life (Chokroverty, 2008). Lack of sleep can potentially cause human beings to develop various health problems thereby making one to lead an impoverished lifestyle. Sleep categorized and classified at a symptomatic stage the inability to sensory activity, weak motor input, reversed conscious knowledge and the reversed urge of sleep. Lack of sleep is caused by the deactivation the cerebral cortex and the brain thalamus. This is due to the inability of the sensory neurons to detect the sleeping senses. Sleep in its true sense is a stage that involves so many body reactions and actions. The body relaxes and adjusts from the tedious work of the day through a powerful process of sleeping. The reason for sleep is blended with numerous theoretical explanation but as for scientist, they have not come up with concrete reason as to why people sleep. The basic psychological theory as to the reason of sleep is to have enough bodily rest to allow the rest of the body to adjust for their normal functioning. Sleep disorder is a phenomenon that causes a lot of harm to an individual. Some people have been reported to even die due to lack of sleeping. It is a thing that causes trauma to an individual. Another theory explaining sleep disorder is that of “fragmented sleep, fragmented mind.” This theory postulates that the other reason why people experience the problem of sleep is the issue of identity. When one is struggling with the issues of personal inadequacy, they are bound to be psychologically disturbed thus developing situations, which cause sleep disruption. People especially children who have hard abusive past like rape, and in the case of Bess, lonely past is bound to have such difficulties. Dissociative identity: that is multiple people living within the same person may cause this sleep problem. A psychotherapist using hypnosis can help such individual (Colligan, 2009). For instance, when the therapist prompt the client into thinking to identify the part of them that they have not spoken to; in this case the client may start thinking of their confusion state of thought, their mood swing, their fears, and even their fallacies in life. Identifying one’s self and coming up to pick one self that they would like to live with may help them come up stronger. Sleep is a very important aspect of human life that one has to partake of every day.
