Birth Order & Personality Summary of video “Birth Order & Personality” The video explores the implication of birth order on personality of an individual. In many case, children of the same family normally end up having diverse personalities even though they belong to same parents. Among the various factors contributing to this, birth order comes out inevitably because it is simpler and can be used efficiently to explain the diversity. This therefore acted as the basis for the creation of the video that had the main objective of giving an insight on how birth order contributes to what makes individuals and how they relate to other people within the family.

In order to support the argument arising therein, the video gives the exhaustive instances of how the different dimensions of birth order (first born, middle, and last born) act differently when compared to each other. As the basis for the discussion, the video makes use of three traits: the achievers, peacemakers and fun loving. These personality traits have much relation to Adler’s personality theory, which also lists corresponding types: ruling type, leaning type and socially useful type.

For the video, the ruling type represents the achievers, which are the firstborn, because their status in the family makes them dominate the other. Adler asserts that these individuals are characterized with intense energy and this can only be attributed to the firstborns. The leaning types, also the peacemakers, are the middle born whose status in the family makes them much sensitive. They are sensitive of their relationship with other family members and would always seek to put things together.

For the last born, the video points out to Addler’s classification of the socially useful type because they are always fun-loving. This is because of the freedom they get and the special treatment they get. References Birth Order & Personality. Video retrieved from: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtflXRb7tWI&feature=related
