The freedom book's ending brings out a clear perspective of Carl and his struggles of becoming free perfectly depicted in the Family Essay essay. In the novel's entirety, Carl is responsible for his younger brother. However, Harley finds himself in trouble after stealing, which sparks a series of events that allows Carl to search for being free. Aunt Beryl, being the suspicious and hateful character in the book, lashes out at the boy, even threatening to throw him out to the streets. However, in an instance of great courage, Carl terminates this move and hands, Beryl, a sizeable amount of money that she was given by Sarah. She didn't expect this move. This money was supposed to be handed over to Aunt Beryl to ascertain she doesn't treat Harley with hate and doesn't throw him out. And she didn't.

In the culmination of the freedom book, the moment Harley moves out and goes to live with Duncan, and Carl gets relieved because Harley is no longer his responsibility. This serves as a great example of Carl freeing himself after adequately taking care of Harley. Another noteworthy moment in the novel about Carl is when he confronts Aunt Beryl because of how he had chained Harley. Carl holds a strong stance and accuses her aunt of negligence. He tells her aunt that if she created sufficient time to take care of Harley, such instances would rarely occur, meaning that he would normally behave under strict monitoring. This instance of freedom is significant for Carl as he finally allows himself to express his emotion about her aunt. Beryl has been unkind to the two for a long time and is searching for any little excuse to chase them from their current home.

The book has numerous instances of Carl getting freedom, but one of the most significant comes at the end when he finds out about Kerry's death, which he didn't know before. She perished in a bus crash while she was returning from 'holiday.' It is at this moment that Carl Matt opened up about his feelings, and he felt alive for the first time, hence freedom. This instance of freedom is quite significant as it allows him to finally rest the idea of whether his mother is going to return or not.

Although the news of her mother's death gave Matt extreme sadness and depression, he found closure. Now, Carl does not have to worry anymore about her mother. This final revelation in the book is an integral part of considering the impact it has on the family. Remember that the work's focused on family and love, which Carl and his brother long to have. All they have is each other, and when they discover that their mother is no more, it gives them great freedom.

The book gives, in great detail, the incredible journey of Matt as he struggles to balance his life and that of his brother in a family unit as he struggles with freedom. When he begins working at Skips barge, Matt finds a perfect moment for freedom by escaping the majority of his troubles. This is true since he finds time to stay away from individuals that do not accept him like her aunt. During his time working at the barge, outside his familiar surroundings, Matt finds sufficient time to explore new ideas and attempt new things. And amid this journey of finding freedom and trying new things at the barge, people start noticing Matt, which means excellent progress.

According to the writer's depiction of Matt's character, he is:
- Shy,
- Lonely,
- Awkward.

He's described as a child that didn't know many individuals and is hard to strike a conversation with. Finally, the barge is Carl's escape, whereby he goes to feel relaxed and put all his troubles behind.

In the freedom book, Matt found numerous instances to set himself free. Some are mental, while others are emotional, and he didn't waste any opportunities. The most significant thing is that the audience is exposed to his entire journey, from the beginning, and at the end, Carl has become a different person, something that many didn't expect. Matt's courage to stand up to her aunt is the starting point of his drive to set himself free. And when he finally starts working at the local barge, he gets an even better opportunity to make things work exceptionally well. It seems that this provided the biggest platform for his ultimate transformation and courage to continue working on himself. His mother's death is also a big moment for Matt as he finally got the opportunity to let something go, making him continue working on his development. By the end of the story, Matt found the courage to set himself free from many things that he did not regret.
